A recent study has found that regular light exercise for senior citizens can be as effective as more vigorous exercise. Seniors can benefit from light activity such as walking, doing household chores, playing miniature golf or light sports such as ping pong. The study found those who did 300 minutes (just 5 hours a week) of light activity were 18% healthier than seniors who didn’t. This is great news for those who are daunted by a more vigorous exercise regimen.
At Dyer Nursing and Rehabilitation, we’re doing our part by including opportunities for light exercise such as bowling, Nintendo Wii games, dancing and more. Here are some more ideas for inspiration:
- Light gardening
- Gentle stretching
- Washing dishes
- Vacuuming
- Window shopping
- Walk and talk with a friend
